又到了一年一度的 Halloween，依往例，我前往 QFC 選了三顆大小不一的南瓜，打算刻不一樣圖案，來應祝 Halloween。今年我選了 Apple Logo，Huskies，跟海盜船為今年南瓜造型圖案，拿出去年買的刻南瓜專用工具，用了一個禮拜天的早上，完成今年的 Halloween Pumpkin。先來個大合照Apple Rules!!Go Huskies!!Apple + Huskies海盜船主角現身～謝謝觀賞！PS. 照相時忘了用腳架，照片晃得很，Sorry...下次改進。[posted with ecto]

好不容易這個週末太陽露出了笑容，趁著出門買菜之便，到 U. Village 的 Apple Store 的 Re-open event，去領襯衫，並去了趟相當可口的 Trophy Cupcake 買了六個 cupcake 回家當點心。U. Village 的 Apple Store 前陣子因為 remodel 而致門市面積縮小，二天前收到 email 得知 remodel 結束了，要重新開張，開張當天的前 500 名顧客還有一件 T-shirt 可以拿。以一位 Mac fan 來說，怎麼可以錯過拿 Apple T-shirt 的機會。由於沒有帶相機，我只好用 iPhone 的內建相機照個幾張現場盛況。由於我對新款 MacBook Pro 跟 iPod Nano 太興奮了，店內就忘了照像，下次有機會再拍囉～買完菜之後，跑去一間電視上有介紹的 cupcake store : Trophy.

今天是我人生中重要的一個日子：博士論文口試，在經過了快三個小時之後，我終於等到我期待很久的那句 "Congratulation" ，當指導教授從會議室走出來向我握手致賀時，我知道我拿到了我努力很久的博士學位。Oh Yeah～～ I am a doctor now.

在感恩節連假的週末，有一項很重要的球賽將要舉行，那就是萬眾矚目的第一百屆 Apple Cup： UW Huskies vs WSU Cougars。這二間已經打了99 年的 Apple Cup 學校，今年要邁入第 100 年，世仇之戰，身為 Huskies Fan 的我，怎麼可以錯過這難得的機會，約了幾位好朋友，趕在票要賣光之前，搶到位子，我還在比賽前特到去 shopping 了Husky Spirit 的用品：衣服、帽子加毛毯，而且都要是「紫」色的才行（別問我，我也不知道為何 UW 是紫色），到比賽當天，準備好所有「機絲」，向 Husky Stadium 前進～在我趕到跟朋友集合地點的路上，體育場旁邊的停車場已經滿滿是人了，他們可是從早上十點就在這裏群聚（球賽下午四點才開始），BBQ＋Bear，RV 車也是隨處可見，這些都是沒有票的球迷，駐紮在球場邊，只為能更接近比賽，體驗即將而來

又到了一年一度的萬聖節，今年又是我一個人過。趁著週末的空檔，特地跑到 QFC 去選了三顆南瓜，尺寸剛好是大中小各一顆，挑來挑去才挑到滿意的。買完了南瓜，又跑到 Bartell 去買刻南瓜專用工具組，今年不想像以往一樣用水果刀或菜刀來刻，想玩點不同的，所以「機絲」要備齊。刻南瓜除了工具之外，還有圖案也很重要。今年呢，就利用工具組附的圖案書，挑幾個看來不錯的圖案試試。沒想到書上寫得簡單，做起來可不容易，除了描圖到南瓜表皮上是一項技術之外，複雜的圖案還得小心別弄斷了線條。在努力奮戰了數小時之後，在我的雙腳雙手都快宣告投降之際，終於完成了今年的萬聖節南瓜。成果發表囉～首先是大南瓜，送給我心愛的老婆，刻的是 " Charming Witch" 。 再來是送給我的寶貝兒子叡叡的「可愛小精靈」。 送我的小女兒芸芸的是「古錐小蝙蝠」，這個南瓜很小，要小心刻～ 大合照～以上照片是在家中拍的，

上個星期六（九月八日），跟一群好朋友前往著名的火山景點：Mount St. Helens，來個大自然一日遊，寫到 blog 分享一下。當天早上從集合出發就開始了不尋常的一天，在約定時間到達時，大家都到齊了，卻獨缺原本要當司機的「某仁兄」，原來他還在睡覺，OMG!! 約在他家還可以遲到，果真「非人也」～就因為這樣的插曲，大家出發晚了一點，等到達 Mount St. Helens 時，已經差不多下午一點多了。我們這次直接殺到最靠近火山口的遊客中心：Johnston Ridge Visitor Center。這是中心外牆上的標誌。到的時候，剛好有人在解說聖海倫火山的歷史，包括了著名的 1980 年大爆炸。當天人還不少，大家都很有興緻的在聽解說員講故事。照片中的那條步道，就是等會我們要走走的 trail 。天氣很棒，天空很藍～除了在外面照相並補充一下食物（祭五臟廟）外，

天哪~生平第一次收到騎腳踏車的罰單就在今天早上發生了~~跟往常一樣，當我騎著腳踏車，沿著 trail 到 UW 時，遇到一個有 STOP sign 的路口（就是 trail 跟 Pend Oreille Rd 的交乂口），我開始減速，同時左看右看，看沒有來車跟行人，我就一口氣加速通過，沒想到過到了對面，被二位身穿制服的警察大哥攔下，當下我是駡在心理，心想不妙，大概是違規闖越 STOP sign，果然如我所料，在我交出證件後，其中一位就到旁邊去開單了，我當時實在不知道要怎麼說才好，還問了會被開單嗎？另一位跟我說：could be 。哇哩咧～～單子開好之後拿給我看，我一看就嚇到，不會吧，要罰美金 103 元耶！我騎腳踏車耶，我不信邪，就再問了一次一定要開單嗎？那位開單大哥很乾脆的說:Yes, 還問我二次我要不要 sign my name, 我還遲疑一下，想說可以不簽嗎，

今天是 Apple Special Event Announcement 的大日子，從早上十點開始，就一直在注意線上文字轉播，果然如大家事前所料，有新版的 iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, 還有「觸控瑩幕」的 iPod Touch, 哇哇～～ 太銷魂了～～看來要多加看緊荷包，免得又要大失血了。不知道我能忍多久，我很中意 iPod Touch, 簡直是 iPhone 的翻版，除了沒電話功能外，其他都有，還多了個 WiFi 功能，真是太棒了，可以取代我的 Palm TX PDA 了....哎唷～要忍住啊!!@_@(picture from Apple.com)

哈哈，在星期五的早上，由於比平常晚了一點起床，在出門前看到這位時常出沒在我家院院的嬌客，小蜂鳥，其實也不能叫她小蜂鳥（"她"? 怎麼知道是女的呢？），蜂鳥本來就小，這位訪客說不定是家族裏的大姊姊了，或是已經當媽了呢～我坐在客廳看她了半晌，她吸了給口糖水後就停在曬衣繩上休息，原本以為她會一下子就飛走了，沒想到停了片刻，這時我才想到要去拿相機照下來。原本想給她來個大特寫，但一方面相機功能有限，再加上不敢太靠近去驚嚇到這位小姐，所以只能儘量放大照了，這張是我照的最清楚的了，其他有的因為我站的角度跟手握不穩，都糊掉了，希望下次還有機會能再補捉她的倩影。如果朋友你對如何招來蜂鳥有興趣或是想看更多照片，可以造訪我的一位好朋友兼鳥類專家：蔚藍手札 的 blog，裏面有很多很棒的照片跟資訊喔～

啊哈，我終於把「哈利波特 7 : The Deathly Hallows」給啃完了～自從七月廿一日首賣那天抱回家後，原本打算慢慢看，後來愈看愈入迷，變成每晚睡前拚命讀下去，在上週六的晚上，一口氣把最後六章給看完，才安心的上牀睡覺，心頭上覺得完成了一件很重要的任務，我當晚睡得不醒人事，隔天差點忘了要出門去買菜... :)(Picture from Amazon.com)(以下文章有點洩露內容，還沒看過書的朋友，請自行決定要不看下去。)整本哈七有七百多頁，在剛開頭的幾章蠻吸引人的，不自覺的跟著主角「逃離」原來的家，在途中遇到 Dark Lord 的伏襲，心頭不禁狂跳了好幾下，而繼續下去的章節，我個人覺得節奏有點慢，交待哈利等人四處藏匿，並持續追尋 Horcrux，以完成 Dumbledore 死前所交待的任務。中間這幾章有點點冗長，而且在這之中只交待如要毀壞 Horcrux ，

昨天晚上吃飽飯，坐在客廳轉電視，看來看去都沒有什麼好看的，就隨手亂轉，切到了 Hallmark Channel ，突然看到熟悉的 Seattle 機場，可是感覺像是很久前的景像，沒有現代的電子設備，而且鏡頭隨後轉到了一處噴水池，OMG~ 那是 UW 的噴水池，我連閉上眼睛都能認出它來。一連的熟悉景物，讓我對這節目產生好奇，看了一陣子後，發現這是個「偵探懸疑」劇，背景就在西雅圖，而劇中的主角: Jessica Flectcher 則受邀到 UW 講課，卻介入了一宗謀殺案。原本我以為有電影在華大取景，後來上網查了才發現我昨天看到是一系列偵探片其中的一集而以。這個系列就叫“Murder, She Wrote“，由 CBS 在 1984推出，演了12年，共有264集，每集一小時長度。而我昨天看到的那集是第5集（"Lovers and Other Killers"），上演日期是1984年11月18

這個週末早上一覺醒來後，沒什麼動力寫程式或「唸書」，於是想起在 Euphtw的部落格中介紹西雅圖著名景點－Pike Market Place 的一篇 post, 於是想再去派克市場走走，再去嚐一次難以忘懷的俄羅斯麵包，順便買點 green tea 泡來喝。於是通常星期天早上都賴床的我，還沒十點就出門了（其實也沒多早啦～）。 一早天氣不好，開車到半路還下了點雨，到了派克市場之後，人潮還是很多，但沒有大晴天那種摩肩接踵的盛況，但這倒是對我很有利，因為人少表示去 Piroshky Piroshky 買麵包的人也可能不會太多，我就不用排太久。去買麵包之前，我先繞去了一家賣香料的店－Market Spice, 去找可以醃小羊排的香料，這家店裏面擺了林林總總，瓶瓶罐罐的各種辛香料，很像藥店的擺設，跟服務小姐問了一下有沒有混合 rosemary 的香料，適合用來醃羊肉的。她拿了一罐來給我聞聞，嗯，

最近在 UW 的首頁上出現了跟土木有關的 headline, 就是一年一度的全國大專院校 Concrete Canoe Competition. 這個比賽是由美國土木工程師協會（American Society of Civil Engineering, ASCE）所舉辦，今年剛好是廿週年，也很巧是由 Seattle 區主辨，我早在二個月前就知道有這項活動，可惜比賽當天，不知什麼原因（忘記了吧？）居然沒去參加，唉，真可惜啊～這個獨木舟比賽自 June 14 至 June 16 一連三天，有二十二個學校參加競賽，比項內容除了獨木舟競速之外，還包括了簡報介紹，及接受評審委員及教授的提問。喔，為什麼要有簡報呢，因為這是 Concrete Canoe, 沒錯，各校的獨木舟要用「水泥」製成，而且還要能在水面上划，要如何將獨木舟用水泥做成，又能夠又輕又快，且要堅固，這裏面就有玄機了，有學問在這呢！

趁著忙完 general exam 的空檔，向 euphtw and JY 借了享負盛名的日劇「交響情人夢」，利用週六的晚上，一口氣把全劇從頭到尾看完（看到隔天凌晨三點半，小朋友不要學叔叔喔～）， 看完的那一刻，只有一個感覺，「哇，我好感動啊～」全劇圍繞在二位主角身上：野田惠（上野樹里 飾）跟 千秋真一（玉木宏 飾）。一位是才華洋溢的天才音樂神童，一位是脫線性格但擁有驚人潛質的鋼琴才女，這二位性格迵異的才子才女因緣際會下碰在一起，藉著對音樂的孰著追求，激盪出一串串令人噴飯，卻又令人低迴的情節，引領我進入一層又一層的情緒翻騰，無法克制的一路看下去，直到尾聲的貝多芬七號交響曲再次響起，才得以暫得舒緩。劇中有令人回味的古典音樂，我個人對古典是個外行，可以看看 euphtw 對此劇的介紹，畢竟專家的解釋，可以令對古典樂陌生的朋友，對此劇有深一層的共鳴。至於外行的我，到是有點點心得。

喔～耶～ 我的 general exam 考完了！！我通過了，從現在起變成「博士侯選人」，表示從現在起，我隨時都可以畢業了～ （是講隨時啦，但沒有那麼快）這個結果，真得讓我鬆了一大口氣，真得放下一顆心了。口試從早上十點開始，出我意料之外的，有位口試委員不能到場，那還好，其他的教授都出席了，聽眾人數不多，都是「自己人」。三十分鐘左右的簡報進行得還順利，也抖了幾個「包袱」，緩和現場緊張感，簡報完後的發問時間，沒幾個是對我有殺傷力的，原本預期會有問題的部份，也沒有人提問，而且有些問題根本不用我回答，我老闆或是「自己人」就幫我講了，真是幸運～剩下我跟口試委員時，提出來的問題也還好，反而多是討論到 論文格式 上面（這跟我研究有很大關係嗎？），所以我可以講，我在「輕鬆」的狀況下，通過考試的。其實也不能說多「輕鬆」，我 rehearsal 了三到四次，腦袋裏無時無刻都出現簡報的畫面，跟老闆演練了好幾次

gula~gula~我有個來西雅圖後養成的習慣，就是在禮拜天的下午，找間 coffee shop，坐下來消磨一下午，通常我都是拿來作跟唸書有關的事情，像今天，我就是拿下午的時間來準備我 general exam 要用的簡報。通常我都會到住家附近的Zoka去坐，但是今天我換了個地方，這個地方也是coffee shop，叫 gula，我不知道這是什麼意思，或許可以從 wikipedia 得到點解釋，但我懶得去找了，反正就是個有free WiFi的地方，而且離我家比Zoka還近，所以我就去光顧它了。這家店是最近才開的，我發現老闆娘是講中文的，沒細問是從那裏來的，但感覺上是從臺灣來的，這間店也有喝咖啡集點的活動，不過蓋點數的章是刻中文的，從刻章的篆字上，我看出來老闆姓陳，名字實在是看不出來，看起像是繁體字，所以我會想他們大概從臺灣來的吧。今天顧店的是二個亞洲面孔的小伙子，我點了

呼～呼～終於搞定了，我的 general exam proposal 在今天早上全都送到 committee member 的手上，可以稍作休息，喘口氣了～這個禮拜到昨天為止，都像在打仗一樣，我跟我老闆都進入緊急狀況，因為要在今天前把我的proposal弄好，才能趕上「口試日期前一個禮拜送達口試委員手上」的要求，這件事終於在我今天早上拿到裝訂好的 proposal 之後，有了個好的結束。其實我的proposal已經磨了幾個月了，原本是預定要在四月份完成口試的，後來因為proposal的內容來不及完成，我老闆要求很多，所以延到五月底才舉行。在我這次回臺灣之前，我已經把所有章節的草稿都交給我老闆了，原本想說等我回來後，他應該都看完並改完了，我可以很快速的修正然後送印，結果不是我所想的那樣。原因出在他上個月太忙了，第二章他漏看，我早在三月底就給他了，他還是沒找出時間來看，而且顯然忙到忘記了，

今天早上來到辨公室時，一時間沒有什麼事好做，腦中突然閃進了一個念頭，想連上交大的 BBS 去逛逛，連上之後，逛到了社園的分類，突然憶起以前我是「交大幼幼社」的一員，於是想去找有沒有幼幼社的社版，無奈我在交大資科的 BBS 站沒看到。萬能的 Google 大神在這時發揮了其超卓的搜尋能力，找到了 交大幼幼社 的網頁，馬上就連了進去。一看到網頁，以前在混社團的日子，跟大學的那段恣意揮灑青春的過往，一下子全湧上心頭。家扶組，仁愛之家組都還存在，我待過的幼圖組（幼幼圖書室），勵德組則已經不見了，多了個「多采多姿組」，而歡樂記憶最多的「兒童向上營」仍繼續舉辨，今年是第 28 屆了，哇，時間過得好快啊～～ 「幼幼營」則是我畢業之後才有的營隊，幼幼社也是變化很大啊，但社團成立的初衷仍然未變，繼續以服務小朋友為宗旨，這也是我當初一頭栽進幼幼社的原因。查了一下網頁上「幼幼人」的資料，雖然有列到 84級，

趁著回臺灣二星期的空檔，帶著全家人到墾丁YOHO渡假村去玩，現在YOHO為了慶祝母親節，有「媽咪免費」專案，只要二人同行，有媽咪隨行，媽咪的吃住是免費的，換句話說，跟我們家一樣的一家四口人，只要付二個人的錢，就有三個人的食宿招待，真是划算。這個媽咪免費還招待媽媽免費 spa 一次，並提供免費托育二小時，讓媽媽可以無憂的享受二小時的專業spa芳療，真是夠讚。可惜的是，這次去玩，我的「水某」都沒有享受到這些待遇，這是後話。我們訂的房間是跨禮拜天跟星期一（比較便宜且少人），在星期日用過午餐後才開車上路。當天南部的天氣還可以，有點陰天，但溫度偏高，就是濕熱夏天午後。一路上二個小傢伙-- 小小 Ariel 跟小 Eric 都是呼呼大睡，替爸爸媽媽省了不少麻煩。一到達 YOHO渡假村，我兒子叡叡就神奇的自動醒來，在 check in 房間後，叡叡就開始四處探索飯店的設備，跑去按電梯，在浴室玩水，

前陣子回台灣一趟，此行除了帶我可愛的 Ariel 回家之外，另一個計畫中的任務是替 Eric 找個合適的幼稚園，讓 Eric 學習過團體生活，了解如何跟同年齡的小朋友互動。原本期望會有個好的開始，沒想到事情並不是如我們所預設的那樣。在這趟回台之前，我就跟 Eric 媽聊到是否要送小 Eric 去上幼稚園，原因是每次在跟小Eric視訊交談時，都發現他坐在電視機前面，目不轉睛的看著卡通，阿公叫他都叫不動，連跟爸爸媽媽講講話也愛理不理，心思都在電視節目上，養成愛看電視的習慣。這可不是為人父母所樂意見到的。雖然家裏有阿公阿媽照顧小Eric的生活，平常也有帶他出去到公園玩的機會，但畢竟阿公阿媽年紀大了，不能跟著孫子到處跑跳，權宜之計，難免打開電視讓他乖乖的坐著，也好餵他吃飯（Eric還沒學會自己吃飯，這也是我傷腦筋的地方），但長久下來，就變成 Eric 愛看電視的壞習慣，每天一起床，

趁著回臺灣前的最後一個星期六 （April 28），爸爸媽媽帶著我去吃 Brunch ，這次要去的餐廳是 Lica 阿姨推薦的 the Hi-Life. 爸爸依 Google Map 找到的地圖，開車載著全家人直達 Ballard, 快到的時候，因為店前面的路很小條，差點錯過。Hi-Life 旁邊有個工地正在蓋大樓，致使店前面的停車位不夠，爸爸只好開到遠一點點的地方，把車停好。這對我來說是沒什麼影響，反正我都坐在 car seat 裏，爸爸會提著我下車，我都不用出到力氣走路，真好！這家餐廳在 local 一定很有名氣，因為我們到的時候，裏面已經坐了好多人。原本以為中午時間去會等很久，沒想到才等一下下，接待阿姨就來給我們帶位，還準備了一個架子給爸爸放 car seat , 我就安穩的躺在大位上，享愛餐廳的熱鬧氣氛。（爸爸說：其實 Ariel 是睡著了～）由於先前在家裏已經作了功課，

近日發現了一個很棒的 Mac 教學網站-- MacUKnow。這是一個由 stanley 發起建置的蘋果圈 教學／新知 網站，內容依 新手／進階 程度而有不同的教學文章，我在裏面翻了翻，發現不少好用的 Mac OSX 密技，以及實用的軟體應用，例如： Mac上如何播放Divx，並掛載中文字幕 如何在 iWork 的 Keynote 中做到圖片去背景 三種方法輕鬆備份你的蘋果電腦這些教學有些解決困擾我許久的問題，有些是我不知道的軟體應用，整個瀏覽下來的感覺很棒，有「為何不早點出現！」的感慨。我已註冊加入會員，希望不久的將來，我也可以分享一些我的 Mac 使用經驗。歡迎蘋果圈舊雨新知，多多光臨 MacUKnow，給作者打氣，也大力鼓吹 PC 使用者轉換平台，不用怕在 Mac 世界不知所措，因為 MacUKnow 的存在，這將永遠不會是個問題。[posted with ecto]

一年一度的華大櫻花賞已經開始，今年剛好我的小女兒 Ariel 出生，就想帶她看看這遠近馳名的櫻花盛景。無奈西雅圖也是著名的雨都，在三月中旬還是天天下雨，好不容易有天早上太陽露出了笑臉，就趕緊帶著老婆小孩去學校照相。可惜才剛到不久，還沒取到多少美景，天又開始變陰了，沒辦法囉，就儘量拍吧，如果趕在櫻花掉光前還有機會（希望天公作美），我會再去一下的，每次去都是難忘的經驗呢。華大 Quad 美景  我心愛的老婆期待明年再見囉～～

最近剛完成了我的博士研究計畫（proposal），在準備的期間，我可是深感用英文寫作的痛苦，也獲得完成一篇（自認為）大作的滿足感。在寫作過程中，從不知如何下手到愉快的在鍵盤上敲下一句句的文字，真是一場心靈的考驗。套句我喜愛的日本節目台詞，這是一場「火焰大挑戰」。因為有死而復生的經驗（有這麼嚴重嗎？），才能告訴別人怎麼走得愉快，因此，在論文寫作的路程上，有些心得我想分享一下，也避免我日後重蹈覆轍。工具篇所謂「工欲善其事，必先利其器」，在你利用現代高科技產品來準備論文時，你也得選擇你要用何種「軟體」來幫助你完成大事。就跟大多數的人一樣，我先想到要用的是 Microsoft Word，這是一個很普遍的「文書處理」軟體，現今大部份的電腦文件往來，大都脫不了 Word 的魔掌，很自然的，我就用 Word 來寫我的論文。原本以為這應該是件花時間但不會太艱難的事情，但沒想到只進行了一章節，我就受不了

最近一直在找可用的留言板版型，用 Google 搜尋可以找到一堆，但不是不容易用，就是不太好看。後來我在幾位 Blogger 同好的網頁上發現 Cbox，一個客製化且易用的 message board，其介面還有中文的選項，真不錯。現在我就將這個 Message Board 加入到右邊側欄，各位朋友，路人, anyone，都可以在我的網站上留言。留言方法很簡單，只要留下 name, email/URL, message，按 Go 就可以 post 了，我丟了幾則留言作為示範，歡迎大家有空多來聊聊。另外做個預告，我的 blog 更新到 Blogger 新版，並加入一些有趣的小東西，這些都是我在網路上找到的，除了功用佳之外，還能替 blog 增色不少。有空再跟大家一一介紹囉～ps. 這些 update/hacks 都是針對 Blogger 的使用者，如果你也是 Blogger 愛用者，

最近發現 Google 也推出了網頁相簿，看來是要跟 Yahoo 的 Flickr 較勁。Google Picasa 是個不錯的相簿管理工具，也可以進行一些簡單的相片編輯，當然啦，如果你是專業 photographer，還是用專業軟體比較好。另外用 Google Picasa 的好處是，你用同樣的 Gmail 帳號，就可以管理同帳號的網路相簿，Google 提供你免費 1G 的空間來放相片，Windows 或 Mac 使用者都可以下載 Picasa 軟體來連線，只不過 Windows 平台多了桌面端的相片管理程式。我是 Flikr 愛用者，但 Picasa 很方便，因此我是將我原始照片都上傳一份到 Flickr 備份（我是有繳錢的 Pro Account），再把要分享的照片，編輯並縮小尺寸後，放到 Picasa 來供大家瀏覽，這樣使 Blog 開啟快多了，以下是二則示範相簿，

OK, 在小 Ariel 出生了一個禮拜之後，我終於有點時間可以補述一下當時的生產過程，現在想起來還是很緊張，也慶幸當時小 Ariel 沒有急著要「出頭」，得以平安在醫院生產。當時的情形是這樣的.... Morning, March 8, 2007早上起床時，Ariel 媽媽就跟我說她上厠所時有發現輕微流血，但是感覺羊水還沒破，於是我就打了通電話給醫院，接電話的護士在問了出血的程度，並且確定羊水沒破，加上寶寶活動力還很強，就告訴我們這現象很正常，「可能」寶寶要生了，要隨時注意。原本我是想留在家裏陪 Ariel 媽媽，但是 Ariel 媽媽想說之前生 Eric 時，在羊水破了之後都還有好幾小時可以「慢慢」上醫院，就叫爸爸我不用擔心，照樣去學校。我想想也是，也就不以為意，照常上學。Afternoon, March 8, 2007下午大約四點半，我回到家後，就問 Ariel

好久沒更新了，一更新就是大條事件 !! 我「又」當爸爸了，我家老二小美人魚 Ariel 已於美國時間 三月八日 9:08 pm 在西雅圖 UWMC 誔生，母女均安，生產過程順利，並創下多項個人紀錄： 最短生產歷程：前後只花 20 分鐘，比哥哥 Eric 快了近三小時。 最少 Hard Push：就我計算，媽媽大概用了三至五次 Hard Push，妹妹就出生了。 最緊張的路程：爸爸在開車趕赴醫院的路上，非常擔心妹妹在車上出生，因為媽媽一直說妹妹要出來了，於是爸爸開得飛快，還好醫院離家不遠，平安到達。至於細節，等我們回家後再詳述囉~~by Niner @ UW Medical Center, Seattle

OctaveOctave 是一款自由軟體 (freeware) ，它是一個跟 Matlab 很像的科算計算軟體，應該說幾乎跟 Matlab 相同，具有相同的指令跟操作方法，而且它是免費的，有興趣的人可以到 Octave Project 瞧瞧。如果想下載試試，可以到下載區下載符合你作業系統的版本，目前支援 Linus, Mac, Windows 和 OS/2 平台。為什麼我會知道這個呢？因為某一天我在逛網路時，看到了 Mobile01的討論，再加上我這學期的線性代數要用到 Matlab，而 Matlab 在我的小白上跑得很慢，因為不是原生 Mac App.，所以興起一試的念頭。結果大出我意料之外， Octave 在我的小白上跑得嚇嚇叫，當下跟 Matlab 說掰掰，開始進入 Octave 的科學計算世界。如果你也是用 Mac 的同好，除了安裝 Octave 之外，你還需要 Gnuplot

上次說到去 Renton 看鮭魚洄游，我們總共去了四個景點，在經過了 Cavanaugh Pond 之後，我們就往 Landsburg Park 前進。Landsburg Part 其實是個淨水站，據說全西雅圖都會區的飲用水，有66%來自 Cedar River，而且這些水源在進到各戶人家前，只有在這裏經過「簡單」的消毒而以，完全沒有「過濾」的程序，因為他們深信利用自然環境來過濾水源：岩石，土壤或是樹根都可以過濾水質。這是我很佩服華頓州的地方，這裏環保的風氣盛行，大部份的人都有保護環境，保謢動物的意念，也難怪他們的水質可以維持這麼好的品質。這在台灣可說是不可能的，台灣的淨水廠如果沒有經過靜置、過濾、消毒的手續，是沒人敢喝的，我覺的應該要好好像這裏的居民學習。這是 Cedar River 流經淨水站前的一段，好清澈喔！沿路上看到的大樹木這張照片是工作人員正在「分魚」。分魚？對啦，

今天一早起來，發現西雅圖的天空陰陰的，一點都不是 Happy Weekend 的標準天氣，不過沒關係，今天我跟學長 Robert 這位「老先覺」，還有一位學長 Lee，一起約好要去 Renton 看鮭魚 Salmon。快速吃完早餐（連中餐一起），拿起相機，就一道出門了。我們的目的地是 Renton，根據學長查到的資料，在 Cedar River Salmon Journey 的路線上，總共有四個景點可以看鮭魚迴游產卵，就在我們朝第一個景點 Renton Library 前進的時候，一不小心就錯過了正確的路口，然後還在納悶尋找的時候，就錯過了第二個景點 Riverview Park，我們最後到達的第一站反而是 Salmon Journey 的第三景點 Cavanaugh Pond。不過事後證明，我們先到第三景點是正確的，幸運之神還是有照顧到我們，至於原因，就容後說明囉。一到達

這學期本來沒打算修課，因為我的畢業學分已經夠了，但是想到去年 Fall Quarter 想去修的一堂研究所的課沒修，今年可能是我最後的機會了，所以就眉頭皺一下，給它修下去，沒想到，這可能是個災難的開始....原本這門「應用線性代數（Applied Linear Algebra）」是去年我想去上的，起因是聽到我一位要好的韓國人同學提到，為了應付他的 Finite Element Analysis，他老闆建議他去修這門課，結果他發現這個 5 學分的課，每週只有三小時的課，而且因為這門課是學校的一個我忘了名字的計畫（好像是遠距教學）之一，上課內容有錄影，可以不用親自到堂聽課，事後再自己看「線上轉播」來唸，所以時間上很有彈性，再聽到他說他在這門課拿到很不錯的成績，對於一個同樣沒有線性代數基礎的我來說，無疑是門「很補」的課，當下就決定我也要試一試，看能不能拿個好看一點成績來稍微拉高一下我的 GPA

我終於拿到了Toastmaster 的 CTM 胸針了！就在十月三日的例行 meeting 中，我發表了我的第十次演講，我的講題是：Being a Self-Leader, in an easy way. 我的內容其實就涵蓋了在這十次的 public speaking 中，我所學到技巧跟心得，有點像是總結我的學習成果，並分享我的經驗跟故事。在 meeting 的結尾時，Toastmaster 向台下的會員跟「客人」(guests) 宣佈這項好消息，並請我上臺接受 CTM 胸針，象徵我完成了第一階段的挑戰。Toastmaster 其實是一個課程，是由 Toastmaster International 所主導的有關 「溝通跟領導」(Communication and Leasdership) 的訓練課程。 在華大也有 UW Toastmaster Club，我是經由好朋友兼室友兼學長－

華大開學了～UW 在九月廿七日正式展開 Fall Quarter。華大是 Quarter 制，所以開學的的時間都符合季節的轉變，開學之後沒多久，校內原本蔥鬱的樹本，開始變色並隨風紛飛了，會有一陣子，校園內會到處都是枯黃的樹葉，散落在馬路邊，屋簷上，或是人行道上，若有幸目睹落葉一大片嘩啦啦的隨風吹瀉而下，你一定會喜歡上這季節女神的秋之序曲，只不過詩人之輩又要開始賦辭說愁了。左邊這張照片是取自華大 Freshmen Convocation 2006，我很高興校園內又多了很多新面孔（其實我只對"妹妹"有興趣啦～)，比起 summer break 的冷清，我還是喜歡看到校園內人來人往，有生氣且活潑許多，很多活動也隨之展開，我心雖嚮往，無奈我無法抽身於 PhD 的緊箍咒中！至於新學期新希望，當然是希望能快快畢業囉～ 在此也祝各位仍為學生者，能夠學業順利，一舉畢業！！（其實這篇是來充版面的，因為我的

跟我相熟的人都知道，我的手上載了三個戒指，最近我左手小指的小金戒子斷了，那可是跟了我有十年以上的老夥伴，姑且稱它為小金，它曾經是我手上唯一的戒子，而且是我乾媽慶祝我考上大學送的禮物（如果記得沒錯的話～)，雖然不是什麼價值千萬的珠寶，但時間換來的感情，跟贈金人的心意，對我而言是無價的。看著小金不能再服侍我了，作主人的心中有許多的感觸，及些許感傷，但即使千言萬語，難以割捨，我還是得找個「才人」來服侍我的小指頭。既然提到了小金，也得提一下之前服待我右手無名指的戒子，那是一個銀戒子鑲在一塊類紫色琉璃的外圍，而且戒環是沒有完成一個圓的，換句話說，它是有個「口子」，會載上這個戒子是因為它是我「水某」跟我還在唸書的時候，去逛台北捷運地下街的時候買的，我覺得它的顏色跟型制很特別，也合我的胃口，所以就召它入宮來服侍我的右手無名指。無奈歲月催人老，這位「紫戒子」在我從美國返台渡假的時候，數度因搬運重物而變形

It had been few days before I found the solution of putting a calender on my sidebar. Today, finally, I found a great solution from Romka's Travellers Notes. This is a great calender that can trace your posts and link them when visitors click on them. It is a convenient navigating tool for everyone. 昨天上完了最後一堂課，也結束我的第一次 Ballroom Dance 課程，感覺很好，學到不少「可以用」的舞步。這一次上課是參加 UW 的 Experimental College Dance Class. 價錢合理，老師人也不錯，只是有點上了年紀，看起來「跳」很久的感覺，有興趣的朋友可以點圖連去他的網頁，裏面有提到他是 "Walking history" of dance. 能有此稱呼，應該是有點資歷了 ~~ 值得一提的是我的舞伴（不是我老婆喔！）： Celeste 是個很 Nice 的朋友，剛好都對 Ballroom Dance 有興趣，所以就結伴一起去，在配舞的時侯，如果沒剛好一對，很多動作都會不清楚其中的變化，very luckly, 我跟 Celeste 都能摸索出舞步的變化，其實沒「看到」的那麼難，而且男生通常只有一種變化，有點小怨嘆，不過男生可以把女生「甩來甩去」，

OK, today I spend a few hours on solving the spline problem in Matlab. I re-wrote some codes so that the curves built by spline function looked good. This time the spline function was only applied to interpolate and extrapolate one curve: the Total Annual Mean Rate of Exceedance. Other curves of different Mws were constructed by the assumption of linear relationship between each two given points.
